InuYasha is a feudal fairy-tale based off of the manga series of the same name. The story-line was created and illustrated by Rumiko Takahashi. Including the Final Acts series, there are over 200 episodes of this amazing series!
Kagome Higurashi is a modern day 15-year old girl who lives in her family shrine. All her life, she grew up with stories and legends dating back hundreds of years ago, most of which consist of the sacred jewel (a.k.a. the jewel of four souls, shikon no tama). Legend has it that the jewel will grant any wish, regardless of what it may be. Of course, none of which she believes in. But, on her 15th birthday, she is unexpectedly dragged into the bone eater’s well (an ancient, dried up well that had been in her family shrine for centuries) and she finds herself in feudal Japan, 500 years before her time.
There she meets an old priestess, Kaede, who points out that Kagome resembles her older sister, Kikyo, a strong priestess who died 50 years ago. While staying with Kaede, the village is attacked by a centipede demon, who is after Kagome. She makes a break for the forest where she comes across InuYasha, the half-dog demon whom Kikyo bound to the sacred tree with the last of her strength.
The centipede catches up with her and manages to extract the sacred jewel from Kagome’s body. In an attempt to stop the centipede, Kagome frees InuYasha, which further confirms that she is indeed the reincarnation of Kikyo.
Though InuYasha manages to kill the centipede, the jewel is later stolen by a crow and it shatters into many shards when Kagome shoots the crow with an arrow. Now, the shards are scattered all over the country and it’s up to InuYasha and Kagome to gather them all.
Collecting the shards don’t seem too complicated until they come face-to-face with Kikyo when she is revived through Urasue’s black magic. It is revealed that Kikyo was InuYasha’s former lover, but her version of the fall out in their relationship is very different from how InuYasha remembers it.
The mystery is resolved when the group is joined by the perverted monk Miroku. He explains how his family bloodline was cursed by an audacious, shape-shifting half-demon named Naraku and how it set him on a journey to defeat him. He further explains how Naraku will be focused on gathering the jewel fragments because he once came close to getting the jewel 50 years ago and that he slew the priestess (Kikyo) who was guarding the jewel.
Further along their journey, InuYasha’s group is joined by two more members, Sango and her demon comrade, Kirara. Sango is a demon slayer whose village is where the sacred jewel originated from. As such, the village had also been gathering the shards and unfortunately, it falls victim to Naraku’s schemes.
With Naraku and InuYasha’s group searching for the shards, it becomes a race of who gathers them all before the other. It also brings into question of what will happen when they are gathered.
This is a really good tip especially to those new to the blogosphere. Simple but very precise info… Appreciate your sharing this one. A must read article!
